Canggu guide: surf, rice fields and Bali’s best cafés
From beginner waves at Batu Bolong to sunset at Tanah Lot — what to do, eat and when to come to Canggu.
Twenty years ago Canggu was a rice-farming village with a few surfer homestays. Today it is Bali’s liveliest neighbourhood — specialty coffee, yoga studios, beach clubs and local designer boutiques. The rice fields are still there in between, and from Pererenan to Berawa you can stay in a quiet villa minutes from the action.
What to do
- Learn to surf at Batu Bolong — long, gentle waves that suit beginners, with boards and instructors right on the beach.
- Echo Beach if you can already surf — a sharper reef break, and a beachfront that fills up at sunset.
- Sunset at Tanah Lot — the temple on a rock in the sea, about 30 minutes from Canggu. Arrive before 5 pm.
- Cycle or walk the rice-field paths — the tracks between Tibubeneng and Pererenan are at their best before 8 am.
- Batu Bolong weekend market — clothes, crafts and food from local makers, busiest at weekends.

What to eat
- Smoothie bowls & specialty coffee — Canggu is Bali’s café capital; nearly every street has its own roastery.
- Nasi campur at a local warung — rice with your pick of dishes — shredded chicken, sate lilit, sambal matah — from around Rp 25,000.
- Babi guling — Balinese spit-roast pork in base genep spice paste, usually sold out before lunch.
- Grilled seafood at Echo Beach — pick your fish and prawns, have them grilled, eat watching the sunset.

Arts & culture
- Batu Bolong & Batu Mejan temples — two small temples on the Canggu shoreline where locals hold ceremonies at low tide and sunset.
- Melasti ceremonies — before Nyepi, processions dressed in white carry sacred effigies to the sea for purification — unforgettable to witness.
- Ogoh-ogoh in the banjar — on the eve of Nyepi, giant figures built by the village youth are paraded through Pererenan and Tibubeneng.
- Local designers & makers — Canggu’s boutiques and studios blend Balinese craft with contemporary design, from weaving to ceramics.
Best time & tips
The dry season (April–October) brings the most consistent surf and the clearest sunsets. Canggu traffic is heavy in the afternoon, so plan mornings near the villa and head to the beach later. To leave the area, a private driver is far more comfortable than a scooter.
Getting there
Canggu is about 45–60 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport depending on traffic. We can arrange an airport pick-up straight to your villa.
