Jimbaran guide: sunset seafood, Bukit cliffs and the Uluwatu Kecak

Dinner on the sand at sunset, a temple on the cliff edge and the hidden beaches of the Bukit peninsula.

Panduan Jimbaran: seafood sunset, tebing Bukit, dan Kecak Uluwatu

Jimbaran is a crescent fishing bay at the neck of the Bukit peninsula, just 20 minutes from the airport. By day, painted jukung boats rest on the sand; by evening, dinner tables are set out on the beach. Behind it the limestone rises towards the Uluwatu cliffs, where Bali’s finest villas look over the Indian Ocean.

    What to do

    • Seafood dinner on the beach — the cafés on Muaya Beach set tables on the sand — choose your fish and eat as the sun goes down.
    • Kedonganan Fish Market at dawn — watch the catch come off the boats; busy and authentic from first light.
    • Uluwatu Temple & Kecak dance — a temple on a 70-metre cliff with a Kecak performance at sunset. Arrive by 5 pm.
    • Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) — a cultural park with one of the world’s tallest statues, 15 minutes from Jimbaran.
    • The Bukit beaches — Melasti, Padang Padang and Dreamland — white sand under the cliffs, 20–35 minutes each.

    What to eat

    • Jimbaran-style grilled fish & prawns — grilled over coconut husks and served with sambal matah and plecing.
    • Seafood priced by weight — usually per 100 g — ask before you order.
    • Sate lilit ikan — spiced minced fish wrapped around lemongrass sticks and grilled.
    • Balinese coffee at a clifftop warung — some of the simplest warungs on the beach roads have the best views.

    Arts & culture

    • Kecak at Uluwatu — dozens of men chant “cak” in a circle, telling the Ramayana with the sunset behind them.
    • Garuda Wisnu Kencana — Balinese sculptor Nyoman Nuarta’s statue of Vishnu riding Garuda, an icon of modern Balinese art.
    • Ulun Siwi Temple — an old temple in the heart of Jimbaran village, opposite the morning market, where village life carries on as it always has.
    • The jukung fishing tradition — brightly painted outrigger boats with eyes on the prow to watch over fishermen at sea.

    Best time & tips

The clearest sunsets come in the dry season (April–October). At Uluwatu keep sunglasses and hats in your bag — the monkeys are famous for taking them — and wear a sarong in the temple grounds. Tickets are usually available at the gate.
